Google Demand Gen advertising for law firms across Search, YouTube and other Google channels

Google Demand Gen Campaigns for Law Firms: What Are They and Do They Make Sense For Your Firm?

For years, Google Ads has been closely associated with one thing: search.

Someone needs a lawyer, searches Google, sees an ad, clicks it, and hopefully contacts the firm.

Google Demand Gen campaigns work differently.

Rather than waiting for someone to actively search for an attorney, Demand Gen allows law firms to reach potential clients while they are watching videos, checking email, reading content, or browsing other websites.

That makes Demand Gen an interesting addition to Google Ads for law firms. But it doesn’t necessarily make it the right campaign for every firm.

What Is a Google Demand Gen Campaign?

Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type designed to reach potential customers across Google’s more visual and discovery-focused properties.

Ads can appear across YouTube, including Shorts, in-stream video and feeds, as well as Google Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network.

Instead of relying primarily on the keywords someone types into Google Search, Demand Gen uses audience signals and Google’s machine learning to identify people who may be interested in what an advertiser offers.

The ads themselves are also more visual than traditional search ads. Demand Gen campaigns can use images, video, carousels, and accompanying ad copy.

In simple terms:

Google Search advertising helps law firms reach people who are actively searching for legal services.

Demand Gen helps law firms reach potential clients before, during, and around that search process.

How Do Demand Gen Campaigns Work?

With a traditional Google Search campaign, a potential client provides a very strong signal of intent.

Someone searching for “personal injury attorney near me” has told Google quite a bit about what they need at that particular moment.

Demand Gen doesn’t require that immediate search.

Instead, Google can use audience information and behavioral signals to identify people who may be relevant to the advertiser. Advertisers can also use their own data, custom audiences, and other audience segments to help guide the campaign.

Google then uses its systems to determine when and where to show the advertiser’s image or video ads across the available Demand Gen channels.

This allows an advertiser to reach someone who isn’t necessarily searching for the firm at that exact moment.

That can be valuable, but it also means Demand Gen and Search are solving different marketing problems.

Where Do Demand Gen Ads Appear?

Demand Gen has expanded considerably since Google first introduced it.

Depending on campaign settings and available creative, Demand Gen ads can currently appear across:

  • YouTube
  • YouTube Shorts
  • Google Discover
  • Gmail
  • Google Maps
  • The Google Display Network

Google also provides channel controls that allow advertisers to determine which of these environments are included rather than requiring every Demand Gen campaign to run everywhere.

This is one of the reasons Demand Gen can look more like paid social advertising than the Google Ads many law firms are accustomed to.

A potential client doesn’t necessarily encounter the firm because they searched for an attorney. They may encounter it while watching a YouTube video or scrolling through other content.

Is Demand Gen Replacing Google Search Ads?

No, and for law firms, this is probably the most important thing to understand.

Demand Gen and Search serve different purposes.

Search is particularly powerful for legal advertising because it captures existing intent.

If someone searches for:

  • “divorce attorney Indianapolis”
  • “car accident lawyer”
  • “employment background check attorney”

They are actively telling Google what they need.

Demand Gen can help create awareness and familiarity with a law firm before that search occurs or reconnect with people who have previously encountered the firm.

Think of it this way:

Search captures demand. Demand Gen can help create and influence it.

For many law firms, those strategies can complement each other. That doesn’t mean the advertising budget should necessarily be divided equally between them.

Can Demand Gen Work for Law Firms?

Potentially, yes.

But practice area, budget, geography, and the firm’s existing marketing strategy matter.

Consider two very different legal situations.

  1. Criminal Defense Attorney – Someone who has just been arrested may immediately pull out a phone and search. There isn’t necessarily a long consideration period where advertising needs to create demand. The demand already exists.

  2. Estate planning – Someone may think about creating a will or trust for months. They might read articles, watch videos, talk with their spouse, and repeatedly encounter a firm’s name before eventually scheduling a consultation.

Demand Gen potentially has a larger role in that second journey.

The same can be true for some areas of family law, business law, employment law, and other legal services where potential clients spend more time researching and considering their options.

Even within those categories, however, client behavior can vary considerably.

That’s why the question shouldn’t simply be:

“Do Demand Gen campaigns work for law firms?”

A better question is:

“Does Demand Gen make sense for this law firm, this practice area, and this marketing objective?”

When Should a Law Firm Consider Demand Gen?

Demand Gen becomes more interesting when a law firm already has a strong foundation.

If your Search campaigns are producing relevant leads, conversion tracking is reliable, your website converts well, and you have enough budget to expand beyond capturing existing search demand, Demand Gen may provide another avenue for growth.

It may also make sense when a practice area naturally has a longer consideration period or when the firm’s growth strategy requires increasing awareness within a particular market.

But if a law firm has a limited advertising budget and isn’t capturing the high-intent searches already happening in its market, Demand Gen probably shouldn’t automatically be the first priority.

Demand Gen Is Another Tool, Not a New Marketing Strategy

Google has been moving toward more automation, broader audience signals, visual advertising, and cross-channel campaigns for years.

In fact, Google is now bringing its traditional Display advertising environment into Demand Gen, further expanding the role these campaigns play within Google Ads.

That doesn’t mean every law firm suddenly needs a Demand Gen campaign.

At WCN Digital, we don’t choose a campaign simply because Google recommends it or because it’s the newest option available. We start by asking what we’re trying to accomplish.

For some law firms, Search advertising should continue doing most of the heavy lifting. For others, Demand Gen can expand an already successful advertising strategy by reaching potential clients earlier and staying visible throughout a longer decision-making process.

The right Google Ads strategy isn’t about using every campaign Google offers.

It’s about choosing the campaigns that make sense for how your potential clients actually find and choose a law firm.
